The Facial Expression Coding System (FACES) — User's Guide
TL;DR — Berkeley’s observer-based system for coding facial expression — a cheaper alternative to FACS.
Ann M. Kring (UC Berkeley) and Denise Sloan.
FACES codes facial expression by valence, frequency, intensity and duration as judged by trained observers, rather than by anatomical muscle units. That makes it dramatically faster than Ekman’s FACS, at the cost of resolution — a deliberate trade for emotion researchers who need throughput.
A working methods manual, published free, of the kind normally locked behind a training programme.
