Why it’s on the list: Spengler’s two-volume morphology of civilizations (1918, 1922), each culture living out a life cycle from spring to winter. Page count is the Oxford one-volume abridgement.

Where I saw it: Named in the editor’s introduction to To a God Unknown as an influence on Steinbeck — Kyle’s note: “Look it up”.

Re-surfaced (recommendation #2) in the reply thread to @typesfast asking “What’s the best history book you’ve read?” (June 5, 2025) — a crowd-sourced list Kyle recovered by hand; the full list lives on What’s the best history book… (tweet). It was listed there as “The Decline of the West — Oswald Spengler”.
