Why it’s on the list: Buchanan’s argument that below-replacement birth rates, large-scale immigration from outside the European cultural sphere and a long cultural shift in the universities, courts and media are together dissolving Western nations from the inside. The book that put the demographic argument into mainstream American conservative politics — a primary source for the population-decline framing that keeps resurfacing.
