The Dark Forest

The second volume of Remembrance of Earth’s Past, the trilogy that opens with The Three-Body Problem. Earth now knows an alien fleet is four centuries out and that the enemy can read every transmission and every document, so the planet appoints four Wallfacers whose strategies must never be written down or explained — the only plans that survive total observability are the ones nobody can articulate. Out of that comes the dark-forest hypothesis: in a universe where any civilisation might be older, faster and unknowable, silence is the rational posture and broadcasting your position is what gets you killed.
