The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway

The Finca Vigía Edition, published by Scribner in 1987 and named for Hemingway’s house outside Havana. It reprints the stories he collected in his lifetime — including “Hills Like White Elephants”, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place”, “Big Two-Hearted River” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” — and adds pieces that had appeared only in periodicals or not at all. The short stories are where Hemingway’s method is most exposed: declarative sentences, almost no interior explanation, dialogue carrying the weight, and the iceberg principle that the part left out is what gives the part on the page its force.

Why it’s on the list: Assigned in the University of Austin’s Writing and the English Language course. Hemingway is the standing argument for compression in English prose, and the stories make the lesson teachable in a way the novels do not — a five-page story either survives having everything explanatory cut out of it or it does not.
