Why it’s on the list: Aristophanes’ comedy, staged 423 BC, in which a farmer buried in his son’s gambling debts enrolls at Socrates’ “Thinkery” to learn the argument that makes the weaker case beat the stronger. Its Socrates is nothing like Plato’s — Plato has Socrates cite this play at his trial as the source of the slander that killed him — and read against the Apology it becomes an argument about whether ridicule is a civic act or a weapon.
