The Catcher in the Rye

Salinger’s novel, published by Little, Brown in 1951: a few days in New York narrated by Holden Caulfield after he is thrown out of Pencey Prep. Its lasting effect on American writing was less the plot than the demonstration that a sustained adolescent first-person voice could carry a whole book.

Why it’s on the list: It is assigned in Writing and the English Language, a course taught out of fiction and memoir rather than style manuals. Catcher is on it as a voice to be studied — the clearest case on the syllabus of a narrator whose diction is the entire instrument.
