The Book That Made Your World

An Indian philosopher’s argument that the distinctive institutions of the modern West — universities, experimental science, technological ambition, rule of law, the idea of the individual, the assumption that ordinary people can read and reason — grew out of the Bible’s assumptions rather than in spite of them. Mangalwadi writes as an outsider comparing his own country’s inheritance with the West’s, and his second half argues that the West’s abandonment of that text is what is eroding the institutions it produced.

Why it’s on the list: The intellectual-history claim that the religious and the technological branches of the tree share a root, made by someone with no stake in Western self-congratulation.
