TL;DR — Gracián’s 300 maxims on navigating a court — the seventeenth-century Jesuit’s manual for operating among people.

Translated from the Spanish by Joseph Jacobs, 1892; scanned and proofed at sacred-texts.com. Public domain.

Three hundred numbered maxims by a Spanish Jesuit on how to act among people who are also acting — reputation, timing, when to withhold, how to be needed. Cynical in the precise sense: it assumes everyone is managing an impression and proceeds from there.

Schopenhauer translated it and called it perfect. Still the sharpest short book on the politics of institutions, four centuries on.
