Wilferd A. Peterson, The Art of Living (Simon & Schuster, 1961). Short inspirational essays, each titled “The Art of…”. They first ran on the “Words To Live By” page of This Week magazine starting in 1960, and reader letters led to the book, the first in a series that sold millions of copies (Wikipedia).
Other books with the same title (not this one):
- Epictetus, The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness (Sharon Lebell’s modern interpretation, HarperSanFrancisco, 1995). A plain-English version of the Stoic Enchiridion, which is already on the list as Enchiridion.
- Thich Nhat Hanh, The Art of Living (2017). Came out after the note was saved (c. 2014), so it is almost certainly not the one.
- Not a book at all: the phrase also names the Art of Living Foundation (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s breathing and meditation courses) and the title of many talks and sermons.
Where I saw it: Saved to Kyle’s Apple Note “Things To Internet” (c. 2014) as a thing to look up, with a note to ask a friend if the search failed.
