The American (Henry James novel)

An early James novel, serialised in 1876-77. Christopher Newman, who has made a fortune in American manufacturing and arrived in Paris to spend it on culture and a wife, courts the widowed Claire de Cintre — and is refused by her family, the Bellegardes, who find him unplaceable. When he learns something the family has hidden, he has to choose between using it and letting it go.

Context: First published in book form 1877. 480 pages in the linked Penguin Classics edition. Lexile 1100. Filed under Fiction. This is James’s first full run at what he later made his subject: the American who assumes that candour, energy and money are sufficient, meeting a social order built on none of those things. It is on a citizen-forming list as a portrait of the American character seen from outside — including the parts of it that look best from there.
