Tactical Nuclear Weapons in Southeast Asia (JASON Study S-266)

F. J. Dyson, R. Gomer, S. Weinberg and S. C. Wright March 1967 View original ↗

TL;DR — The 1967 JASON study, by Freeman Dyson, Steven Weinberg and two colleagues, on whether using tactical nuclear weapons in Vietnam would make military sense.

Institute for Defense Analyses, JASON Division, Study S-266, March 1967. Classified secret, released through a FOIA request by the Nautilus Institute. The four physicists were asked to assess tactical nuclear use in the Vietnam War; their answer was that it would bring little military gain and serious costs, including exposing US bases to the same weapons.

What it is: a declassified primary source, 60 pages, scanned with no text layer. It is a rare look at scientists advising on whether to use the bomb.
