Steam Engine Time

“Steam engine time” is an engineer’s term for the moment when the knowledge required for an invention has coalesced to the point that the invention becomes, arguably, inevitable — multiple people are poised to make it at once. In The Idea Factory, the engineer who led the team designing the cellular system looked back at the early 1970s as a perfect example: the pieces needed for cellular telephony had accumulated and the breakthrough was waiting to happen.

The term invokes the Scottish engineer James Watt, inventor of the first commercially popular steam engine (and the namesake of the unit of power). Watt did not conjure his engine from nothing — by the late 1700s the underlying ideas of how to use compressed steam to run heavy machinery had matured enough that his startling improvements were, in the book’s framing, the natural next step rather than an isolated stroke of genius. The concept is a compact way of describing simultaneous, convergent invention.

Context: “Steam engine time” is a phrase popularized in science-fiction and futurist writing (often attributed to Charles Fort) to describe the phenomenon of multiple independent discovery — the idea that inventions appear when their prerequisite knowledge and tools are in place, so that the question is less “who” than “when.”
