Six Frigates

Toll’s history of the six ships Congress authorised in 1794 — the procurement fight, the shipwrights, the Barbary and Quasi-Wars, and the frigate duels of 1812 that made the new republic’s navy credible.

Why it’s on the list: Named in the replies to @typesfast asking for the best history book you’ve read — a crowd-sourced list Kyle recovered by hand and saved. As much a book about industrial policy and shipbuilding as about battles.

Kyle’s note also carries the variant “Five Frigates by Ian Toll” — the same book, miscounted; both forms are kept as aliases.
