Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Why it’s on the list: A green giant offers Arthur’s Christmas court a bargain — one blow now, returned in a year — and Gawain’s real test turns out to be not the axe but three mornings of temptation in a stranger’s castle. With Beowulf, one of the two great anonymous alliterative poems of English: one about courage, this one about honesty, and much harder on its hero.
