Sherlock Holmes
Why it’s on the list: Conan Doyle’s consulting detective, in whichever of the four novels and fifty-six stories a class is assigned: a client arrives at Baker Street, Holmes reads their life off their sleeves and their boots, and the solution turns on a detail the reader was given and did not notice. The cleanest demonstration in English of the difference between looking and observing.
Where I heard about it
- Founders Classical Academy — on the fifth-grade list at this classical school in Lewisville, Texas, posted by the Classic Learning Test in September 2026. The list names the character rather than a book — Holmes is on the syllabus as a habit of attention, not a single text. The full eight-year sequence is on Founders Classical Academy Reading List.
