The Moon comes apart for reasons nobody establishes, the fragments will grind themselves into a two-year bombardment that sterilises the surface of the Earth, and humanity has roughly that long to improvise an orbital ark out of the space station and whatever can be launched. Two thirds of the book is a procedural about doing hard engineering against a fixed deadline — propellant budgets, swarm robotics, orbital mechanics, and the governance of a few hundred people who cannot leave — and then it jumps five thousand years to look at what that bottleneck produced.
