Self-motivated

In The Expertise Economy, “self-motivated” marks the learner who takes development into their own hands without managerial support or personalized technology. The book concedes the point but pushes past it: even self-motivated employees rarely track what they actually learned in a year, which is the argument for personalized learning records or profiles — “to help people keep track of all the valuable learning they do every day” so that learning “count[s] for something towards your goals.” Self-motivation is also cast as a precondition for learning itself: “It is impossible for any meaningful learning to take place without that initial self-drive and self-motivation, and there is no better way to learn than applying new skills directly to real work.”
