Sam Gennawey

Sam Gennawey is a professional urban planner and the author of Walt Disney and the Promise of Progress City, the book that reconstructs Walt Disney’s original EPCOT — the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow — as a real city of ~20,000 residents Walt meant to build, not the theme park it became. Per the book, Kyle first encountered Gennawey in 2009 through his Disney fan blog “SamLand,” where Gennawey applied his urban-planning insight and experience to explain why guests had such positive experiences at Disney parks.

In the book, Gennawey reads Walt Disney as an urban planner, threading his vision through Christopher Alexander’s “timeless way of building,” Victor Gruen’s cellular theory of the city, and the New Urbanism movement that later echoed Walt’s unbuilt 1966 plans almost point-for-point. Gennawey’s corpus also attributes a voracious, multidisciplinary-learning archetype to figures like Sam Walton and Elon Musk — the same trait he extracts from Walt’s method.
