Sam Bankman-Fried
Sam Bankman-Fried
Founder of the crypto exchange FTX, cited in The Value Chain of Capital - Research for his “financial circle-jerk” framing of the capital value chain (via an SBF tweet). Kyle collects the framing, then turns it on its source: his irony note is that the loudest voices calling the venture chain a Ponzi or circle-jerk — SBF, and Chamath on the “VC Ponzi scheme” side — are themselves among the clearest examples of the dynamic, a case of financial “he who smelt it, dealt it.” Kyle’s own caution in the essay is that the Ponzi label is too strong for venture: late Instacart investors still hold shares in a real ~$10B business, not “a bag of hot air,” so the chain is real even if the circle-jerk metaphor overreaches.
Context: Sam Bankman-Fried (b. 1992) founded the crypto exchange FTX and the trading firm Alameda Research; FTX collapsed in November 2022, and he was later convicted of fraud and conspiracy.
