Reverse Pilot

Reverse Pilot

A reverse pilot is a tool from Greg McKeown’s Essentialism for eliminating nonessential activities: you “test whether removing an activity has any negative consequences.” Rather than piloting a new initiative to see if it adds value, you quietly stop doing an existing one and watch for fallout — if nothing breaks, the activity was nonessential and can be dropped for good. In the book it sits among the disciplined-elimination tactics — alongside “extreme criteria for filtering options,” the “matrix of essential intent,” and Zero-Based Budgeting — that the essentialist uses to clear space for the vital few. Kyle tagged the relevant highlight simply: “Tool: reverse pilot.”
