Product Qualified Lead
Product Qualified Lead
The qualification signal at the center of Product Led Growth (PLG), as laid out in OpenView’s Product Led Growth: The End User Era. Traditionally marketing teams used marketing qualified leads (MQLs) or sales qualified leads (SQLs) to benchmark a prospect’s willingness to buy. In a product-led company, “once your product has a free trial or freemium experience, you can use it as the indicator that a user is ready to buy — that’s a product qualified lead (PQL).” Actual product usage — not a whitepaper download or a webinar signup — becomes the readiness signal.
The book ties the PQL tightly to the freemium motion and the “aha moment”: “if you put the paywall before the ‘aha moment,’ you kill your conversion rate,” because qualification depends on the user reaching the value moment first. Practically, OpenView suggests surfacing PQLs by running cohort analyses of previous purchasers, gating premium features and tracking clicks, and watching when usage limits get tripped. The signal has teeth: email outreach immediately following a free-trial signup hit a 67% open rate and 18% reply rate — a 6x lift over outreach following an inbound content download. The PQL is part of the broader PLG vocabulary (alongside viral coefficient, land-and-expand, and North Star metrics) that makes the product, not the sales team, the engine of qualification.
