Pictures of the Socialistic Future

A dystopian novel written in 1891 by a German liberal parliamentarian and published as a direct answer to the socialist utopias of his day. It is narrated by an enthusiastic worker who welcomes the revolution and then records, without ever quite abandoning his faith, the steps by which it closes the borders, abolishes the currency, assigns labour, and turns on its own supporters. Its interest is that it predicted the mechanics of twentieth-century state socialism decades before any of it was tried.

Why it’s on the list: It sits in the Marxism and Collective Psychology section as the contemporary prediction — written before the experiments, not after them, which is what makes it evidence about the theory rather than about the outcome.
