Pepsi — "Breathtaking" Brand Identity
TL;DR — The agency document that justifies the Pepsi circle with the golden ratio, the Earth’s magnetic field, gravity and the Mona Lisa. The most-cited PDF in either thread, and cited as comedy.
The single most-recommended document across both threads — five mentions — and every one of them a joke.
Arnell Group’s brand identity deck for the 2008 Pepsi logo redesign, reportedly billed at around a million dollars, explains a redrawn circle by invoking the golden ratio, the Earth’s magnetic field, gravitational pull, Renaissance perspective, the Mona Lisa, and the geodynamo. It coins “Breathtaking Design Strategy” and diagrams the Pepsi globe as an emanation of universal principles.
Why it endures. It is the canonical artifact of post-hoc rationalisation in design — a document where the work came first and the theory was reverse-engineered onto it at length and with total confidence. It is funny, and it is also genuinely instructive about what happens when a deliverable has to justify a price rather than a decision.
That two separate “best PDF” threads converged on it, five times, is the clearest signal either thread produced about what people actually save.
