Onboarding
Onboarding
In the notes on Product Led Growth — The End User Era, onboarding is the central lever for retention in product-led SaaS. The notes lean on OpenView benchmarking showing that most churn is decided in the first week of use — so the onboarding experience disproportionately determines both short- and long-term retention. The book frames this bluntly: “Done right, the onboarding experience is a gold mine of opportunity. Done wrong, it can sink your customer relationship before it’s even gotten off the ground.”
Onboarding also feeds word of mouth: the “secret” to organic growth isn’t a trick but delivering value, “creat[ing] such a great experience during onboarding that people feel compelled to tell other people about it.” Because the fastest-growing SaaS companies retain ~20% better than the median, onboarding sits upstream of the retention and net-dollar-retention metrics PLG companies live by.
Context: In SaaS and product-led growth, “onboarding” refers to the early-lifecycle process that gets a new user from sign-up to first realized value (the “aha moment”), often self-serve and in-product rather than sales-assisted.
