Oedipus the King
Oedipus the King
Why it’s on the list: Sophocles’ tragedy, first staged around 429 BC, in which Oedipus investigates the killing of Thebes’s old king and discovers that he is the criminal — told to an audience that already knew the story, so the suspense is not what happened but how long he will keep looking.

About this edition
The ninth-grade tragedy sequence runs Oedipus, then Antigone, then Aristophanes’ Clouds — two Sophocles plays about the same family, then a comedy that attacks the intellectual fashion of the city that staged them. The play opens with Thebes under a plague that the oracle says will lift only when the killer is found.
