Oculus

Oculus is the VR company Palmer Luckey founded before Anduril, and in Kyle’s corpus it functions as the origin of Luckey’s “Layer 2 naysayer” arc — the case study for conviction holding firm against social disapproval. In Conviction-Led Contrarianism, Kyle frames Luckey as someone who “persevere[d] through” Layer 2 dependencies “first with Oculus because of his intense conviction in and passion for VR,” then again with Anduril — despite investors saying VR “would never produce a large company.” Oculus is the first instance of the pattern the whole Luckey thesis rests on.

The Beliefs, Blockbusters, and Boyhood essay supplies the biographical detail Kyle draws on: Luckey “was the founder of Oculus which he sold to Facebook for $2B,” and was later fired from Facebook over a small political donation — an experience he calls “one of the most formative” of his life and the source of his chip-on-the-shoulder. Kyle reads the sale itself as conviction, not cash-out: Luckey said no to a $1B offer and sold only when Facebook also committed to investing roughly $1B a year into VR for ten years — “Palmer sold Oculus because of what that kind of investment would mean for the progress in VR.”
