Observation
Observation is, in Kyle’s reading of Leonardo Da Vinci, Leonardo’s “greatest skill” — and crucially “not some magical gift but a product of his own effort.” This is the load-bearing move of Walter Isaacson’s biography, which “refuse[s] the lightning-strike theory of genius”: Leonardo’s genius “was a human one, wrought by his own will and ambition… built from curiosity and intense observation, skills any of us can aspire to improve.” Observation here is a learnable discipline, paired with Curiosity and a “childlike sense of wonder,” not an innate endowment.
The notes specify its method. Deep observation “must be done in steps” — “begin with the details… and do not go on to the second step until you have the first well fixed in memory.” It feeds an experimental, anti-dogmatic stance: Leonardo “consult[s] experience first and then with reasoning show[s] why such experience is bound to operate in such a way,” and he was “a forerunner of observational science,” abandoning a theory the moment an experiment showed it flawed — the Self-Criticism thread Isaacson rhymes with Charles Darwin “thinking in reverse.” Mathematics, in turn, “was the key to turning observations into theories,” “the language that nature used to write her laws.” (A narrower, imperative-form sibling concept, Be Observant, already exists; this page holds the noun-form idea.)
Context: Observation — disciplined, attentive perception of the natural world — is foundational to the empirical/scientific method, distinguishing knowledge grounded in evidence from knowledge derived purely from received authority or abstract reasoning.
