The fifth volume of The Expanse splits its crew up, sends each of them home, and then attacks Earth with rocks — stealth-coated asteroids dropped by a breakaway faction that has correctly identified which few chokepoints an interplanetary civilisation actually depends on. It is the most direct treatment in the series of the theme that runs through all of it: a system of a hundred billion moving parts held together by a handful of load-bearing ones.
