Much Ado About Nothing
Why it’s on the list: Two courtships in Messina: Claudio and Hero, wrecked by a slander their friends believe instantly, and Benedick and Beatrice, tricked into admitting what everyone can already see. Beatrice’s “Kill Claudio” is the hinge, and the reason the comedy has teeth.
Where I heard about it
- Founders Classical Academy — assigned in the eighth grade at this classical school in Lewisville, Texas: the third Shakespeare on its list, at fourteen, the first where the pleasure is the wit rather than the plot, and the first that asks a student to notice how fast a reputation is destroyed and how little evidence it takes. Posted by the Classic Learning Test in September 2026 as an example of what a classical curriculum assigns. The full eight-year sequence is on Founders Classical Academy Reading List.
