More Is Different
TL;DR — Philip Anderson’s 1972 Science essay arguing that reductionism does not imply constructionism: each level of complexity has its own laws.
Science 177, no. 4047 (4 August 1972). Four pages. Anderson accepts that everything obeys the same fundamental laws but argues that it does not follow that you can build up from those laws to explain larger systems. The constructionist hypothesis “breaks down when confronted with the twin difficulties of scale and complexity,” and new properties appear at each level.
What it is: a landmark essay in the philosophy of science, written by a future Nobel laureate in physics. The posted link goes to Science’s paywall; this copy is from a KIT physics course page.
