Chateaubriand’s memoirs, written across forty years and published only after his death, covering the ancien régime, the Revolution, exile in London, Napoleon, and the Restoration he served as a minister.

Why it’s on the list: Named in the “best history book” thread. A first-hand account of the end of one world and the start of another, by a man who was present at most of it and is also one of the great French prose writers.

Published posthumously, 1849–1850. Page count is an English selected edition; the complete work runs to several volumes.
