Madame Bovary

Flaubert’s first published novel, 1857. Emma Rouault marries a dull provincial doctor, finds that marriage is nothing like the novels she read as a girl, and spends herself into ruin chasing the feeling those books promised her — through two affairs and a draper’s credit line. Flaubert spent five years on it, notoriously reworking sentences until the prose carried no visible authorial opinion at all, which is the technique the book is studied for as much as the story.

Context: First published in book form in 1857, after serialisation in 1856. Lexile 1030. Filed under Fiction. Flaubert and his publisher were prosecuted for offences against public morals on the novel’s appearance and acquitted, and the trial is part of why the book matters historically: it is one of the founding cases for the proposition that depicting a thing is not endorsing it.
