In Amazon Unbound and on the Jeff Bezos page, MacKenzie Scott (then MacKenzie Bezos) appears as an early co-founder of Amazon: in 1994, when Bezos quit D. E. Shaw to start an online bookstore, the twenty-four-year-old MacKenzie took the wheel of the family’s ‘88 Chevy Blazer and drove northwest from Fort Worth while Bezos sat in the passenger seat tapping financial projections into a spreadsheet. The book frames her as the partner present at the company’s literal launch — “early co-founder driving the ‘88 Blazer west” — who later became “a $6B philanthropist.”
