Look to Windward

Banks’s sixth Culture novel, published in 2000, built around the light from a wartime atrocity arriving at a Culture Orbital eight centuries after the fact, and around what the people who caused it owe the survivors. The dedication reads “For the Gulf War Veterans,” and the title comes from a line in T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land.

Context: the volume where the series turns its moral attention on the Culture itself — the consequences of an intervention it chose to make, carried by a character who cannot be argued out of his grief. Often named the best-written book in the sequence.
