Liquid Oxygen Augmented Gas Core Nuclear Thermal Rocket

V. Krishnamurthy and A. Vignesh 2013 View original ↗

TL;DR — A concept paper that adds a liquid-oxygen afterburner to a gas-core nuclear rocket’s nozzle to trade some efficiency for much more thrust.

Advances in Aerospace Science and Applications 3(3), 2013, from an aeronautical engineering department in Chennai. It describes injecting liquid oxygen into the divergent section of a gas-core nuclear thermal rocket’s nozzle to burn supersonically with the hydrogen exhaust, borrowing from scramjet design.

Weight: low. Six pages, a concept description without testing, in a low-profile journal. The underlying LOX-augmented NTR idea comes from earlier NASA-funded work.
