Over 6,000 roots, 570 pages.

Ithkuil is a constructed language designed not for speaking but as an experiment: how precisely could a language encode cognitive distinctions if it were engineered rather than evolved? The morphology is famously dense — a single word can carry what English needs a clause for — and famously unusable at conversational speed.

The lexicon opens with the grammatical roots: the Carrier Root, the General Demonstrative Root, and onward.

An extraordinary artifact of one person’s sustained obsession, and a genuine probe of the Sapir–Whorf question.
