Lemurian Time War

Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU) 1999 View original ↗

TL;DR — The CCRU’s “hyperstition” text about William S. Burroughs in an occult time war, partly fiction by its own admission.

A chapter from the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, the Warwick group around Nick Land and Sadie Plant. The text says it is based on “sensitive information” from an intelligence source, admits that the narrative has been partly fictionalised, and calls much of the tale “extremely implausible.” It is the best-known example of the CCRU’s idea of hyperstition: fictions that make themselves real by circulating.

What it is: theory-fiction. It is in the library as a document of an intellectual subculture, not as a factual claim.
