Benedict’s biography of LeBron James, reported from hundreds of interviews, follows him from a childhood in Akron through the national spotlight he was under as a high-school junior to four championships and a second career as an owner of media and business ventures. The through-line is leverage of an unusual kind: an athlete who, starting from a lifetime Nike deal signed before he played a professional game, systematically converted athletic performance into ownership, control of his own narrative, and a say in how his sport is run — the opposite of the standard arc where the institution captures the talent.
