Karl Marx (Berlin)

Berlin’s intellectual biography, written in his twenties and first published in 1939 — the book that made his reputation. It reconstructs Marx’s thought in its own terms and in its Hegelian and Young Hegelian context, treating him as a serious systematic thinker rather than a polemicist, while being unsparing about the temperament. Berlin revised it across several later editions.

Why it’s on the list: The sub-section’s method is to read Marxism through interpreters as well as sources; Berlin is the entry that takes the ideas seriously enough to be worth arguing with, which is what a family-tree reading needs.
