• Hired for raw intelligence, not domain veterans. On arriving in Seattle he filled the logistics ranks with scientists and engineers rather than retail-distribution veterans — writing down “a list of the ten smartest people he knew and hired them all,” including supply-chain engineer Russell Allgor from Bayer AG. • Renamed the warehouses. Judging that “the factory physics were a lot closer to manufacturing and assembly than they were to retail,” he rebranded Amazon’s shipping facilities — no longer “warehouses” or “distribution centers” but forever after fulfillment centers (FCs).
• Applied manufacturing discipline. He brought Six Sigma and lean-manufacturing rigor to fulfillment; when he judged progress had plateaued he deliberately hired from outside the Six Sigma-molded ranks for a “fresh approach.”
• Inner-circle operator. He sat with Bezos on the committee reviewing the secretive “Competitive Intelligence” group’s findings, and he framed Amazon itself as “scaffolding to magnify the thinking embodied by Jeff, to the greatest extent possible.”
