Inversions

A 1998 novel told as two interleaved court narratives on a world at roughly medieval technology — one following a king’s physician, the other a warlord’s bodyguard — with the Culture never named and only inferable from what the two outsiders can do. Banks described it as “an attempt to write a Culture novel that wasn’t.”

Context: the sixth entry in a16z’s Culture listing and the one that breaks the pattern: intervention seen from below, by people with no vocabulary for what is intervening. It reads perfectly well as historical fiction, which is the point, but it lands much harder after two or three of the space-opera volumes.
