The Internet of Things (IoT) runs through Kyle’s 2018 smart-city and mobility notes as the instrumentation layer that turns physical assets into data. At Innova, IoT is the defining feature of the business: a first/last-mile electric mobility-as-a-service company whose electric vehicles are instrumented with an IoT data-analytics platform (sensors, cameras, air-quality sensing, ground radar) gathering data roughly every 10ms. The real thesis there isn’t rides but data (Data in Investing) — Innova aims to be the most-instrumented high-use mobility option and sell its aggregated data and dashboards to cities, utilities, transit agencies, and employers.

Venture Smarter frames IoT at the city scale: a smart-city / IoT community and Cisco partner whose whole premise rests on a Cisco study finding ~75% of IoT projects fail, which Venture Smarter attributes to smart-city development being a deeply siloed problem — “how can we get these smart projects to completion in real life?” Its co-founder Zach started the IEEE Smart City Standards Committee, the standards body anchoring municipal IoT interoperability. On the public-sector side, Doug McCullough — CIO of Dublin, Ohio — names IoT as one of the technology domains he works across (alongside AI, autonomous driving, and AR), with Dublin’s IoT and autonomous-mobility pilots tying into broader City Building themes.
