Information Theory
Information theory enters Kyle’s corpus through The Idea Factory, Jon Gertner’s history of Bell Labs, where it is treated as one of the great intellectual achievements of the twentieth century — a field Claude Shannon “founded,” whose major results he “stated and proved most of them all pretty much at once.” The seed was a 1948 Bell System Technical Journal paper, “A Mathematical Theory of Communication,” which Scientific American later called “the magna carta of the information age.” Its core move was to treat information “very much like a physical quantity, such as mass or energy,” abstracting away from any single medium (telephony, radio, television, telegraphy) to find general rules common to all of them — an ambition Shannon had hinted at to advisor Vannevar Bush as early as 1939, building on Ralph Hartley’s earlier “Transmission of Information.”
The book lays out the framework’s load-bearing pieces. Shannon proposed measuring a message’s information content in “bits” (binary digits, a term borrowed from colleague John Tukey) — one bit being the information produced when a choice is made between two equally likely possibilities. By measuring both the information capacity of a channel and the information content of a message, an engineer could know how fast and how reliably a message could be sent, and align the two — and, astonishingly, make the chance of error as small as desired. The book notes that all modern communications engineering, from cell-phone transmissions to compact discs to deep-space communication, rests on this insight; mathematicians debated not whether Shannon was ahead of his contemporaries but by how many decades.
