Hypersonic Weapons

The book’s distinction is that until now weapons flew in one of two ways — fast but predictable (ballistic missiles on parabolic trajectories, which is how they get shot down) or slow but maneuverable (cruise missiles). Hypersonic weapons are different “because they can travel both fast and unpredictably”: more than five times the speed of sound (over 3,800 mph, roughly a mile per second), with an unclear flight path once launched. At those speeds, a weapon could travel from China to Guam in about thirty minutes, and US officials have stated there is currently no capability to defend against — or even track — these weapons in flight.

The book uses hypersonics as evidence of a procurement and prioritization failure: “because Washington did not sufficiently prioritize hypersonic weapons,” China has gotten ahead, pouring billions into the specialized wind tunnels and infrastructure required and conducting multiple test flights a year (China’s DF-17 is cited). The US is racing to catch up at great cost — a single test firing can exceed $100 million — which will limit how many such weapons anyone fields. The arms race in hypersonics also drives a counter-race in directed-energy weapons (lasers, high-powered microwaves).
