Howard Gardner

Howard Gardner is the Harvard psychologist who developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences. In Education Nation, Milton Chen cites Gardner for documenting the “intrapersonal” and “interpersonal” intelligences among the eight multiple intelligences (which also include the verbal, logical-mathematical, musical, and bodily-kinesthetic), and for reframing their role for twenty-first-century thinking and behavior. Gardner describes the intrapersonal intelligence as the ability to identify and use one’s own feelings and motivations — a deep understanding of oneself — and the interpersonal intelligence as the capacity for empathy and working well in groups.
