Hayek: A Life

The first volume of the authorised scholarly biography, covering Hayek from his birth in Vienna in 1899 to 1950 — the Viennese milieu, the First World War, the business-cycle work, the move to the LSE, the long argument with Keynes, the calculation debate, The Road to Serfdom and its unexpected popular success, and the personal rupture that ended his first marriage and took him to Chicago. It runs past 800 pages and is built on archival material rather than on Hayek’s own recollections.
