Kurt Vonnegut Jr. 1961 View original ↗

TL;DR — Vonnegut’s 1961 story of enforced equality — handicaps on the strong, the graceful and the clever.

“THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal.”

Six pages. Equality is achieved by handicapping: weights on the strong, masks on the beautiful, a radio in the ear of the intelligent that interrupts thought before it completes.

Routinely misread as a simple satire of egalitarianism — Vonnegut, a lifelong socialist, was at least as interested in the spectacle of televised violence and in a public that cannot hold a thought long enough to object. The story survives both readings, which is why it is still assigned.
