Grid Systems in Graphic Design / Raster Systeme für die visuelle Gestaltung

Josef Müller-Brockmann 1981 View original ↗

TL;DR — The Swiss-school manual on grids — the book behind most systematic layout since.

Niggli, bilingual German/English. Subtitled A Visual Communication Manual for Graphic Designers, Typographers and Three-Dimensional Designers.

Müller-Brockmann’s argument is moral as much as practical: a grid is a way of subordinating the designer’s ego to the reader’s comprehension. The book then works systematically through column construction, margins, type areas and the extension of the grid into three dimensions.

The direct ancestor of every CSS layout system, and still the clearest statement of why constraint helps.
