What the sources say
The fullest public account in the corpus is a 2021 thread by Sahil Khetpal, saved as An Inside View of One… (tweet). Its claims, as the thread states them:
- Premise. The internet is an enabler of innovation across sectors rather than an industry in itself, and most innovations are easily copied, so the firm looks for businesses with a powerful moat.
- Concentration. Ten to twelve companies per fund, fewer than five new investments a year. This is the posture described on Concentrated Investing.
- Process. More than 1,200 companies reviewed a year, narrowed to about 100, then about 20 for full-team work, after which the team splits into two sides of the investment and debates it. The final decision rests with two principals who must agree.
- Sourcing. Data-driven: credit card data, app usage and employee movement, months or years ahead of an investment.
- Check size. $20-60M at Series B or later, split roughly evenly between North America and the rest of the world, aiming for IPO realizations in 5-7 years.
- Track record (reported). The thread cites 51% annual returns after fees from 2012 to 2020, against about 16% for a Cambridge Associates venture index, and a large Coupang position after its IPO. These are the thread’s figures; the original tweet no longer resolves.
The firm’s own summary, quoted at the end of the thread: “We believe a small handful of companies define each generation.”
Ranking Venture Investors places Greenoaks in the 16-30 band of its venture-investor ranking.
